She won a spot on Team Geico! 2nd Annual 10K Across the Bay started with the trip to Annapolis with a friend who grew up "across the bay." We had a blast at the expo which was quick, smooth, and easy. It got a little crowded as we looped back through the vendors. Jess won the Geico prize wheel and earned massages at any race sponsored by Geico as long as you wear their race shirt. Seriously?!!! Any race?!!! She looked awesome in her Geico shirt and got her well deserved massage at the end of the race. The Geico support team even cheered her across the finish. She said it was well worth wearing the high vis green t shirt! |
Race Day Report
My favorite time is always watching the sunrise over the bridge. I spent some time at the start waiting on the arrival of my sister but got a little cold so started without her. I started with corral 10 and did the bob and weave through the runners until I found my own space on the bridge. The ascent up the first 2 miles is pretty gentle. My body handled the first mile well, and struggled with the second one. Once you reach the top, the rest of the bridge is all down hill. There were lots of opportunities for selfies for those who wanted them as we could not have had a better November day! Warm and sunny can be rare in Maryland Novembers. Speaking of sunny, next race someone please remind me to bring my sun glasses! I can't believe I forgot them again. The runners around me weren't super social and stuck in their own little groups. However, one older gentleman did make me laugh when he yelled out that the flashing light over the one lane meant we were going too fast. Be forewarned should you choose to participate in this course the post bridge portion involves another little uphill as you run an overpass over route 50 to the finish. The finish line was well stocked with supplies and a little crowded. There was a runner down at the finish and we got pushed to one side. I hope that they are ok!
The line to get on the bus pack to Navy Marine Corps needed to have a longer cue as it was difficult for everyone to determine where the shuttle for each location started and ended. It wasn't too bad though as I have already registered for next year. I was 30 sec slower than my mental goal but set my current post 40 PR for 10K running.
